Carn an-t Saigart Mor and Carn a' Choire Bhoideach, 15th June 2019

In an effort to make the most of the Summer and get out more frequently, I cleared my schedule for a Saturday to make sure I could get at least two new Munros added to my list.

Some plans were made and didn't pan out, but I was still up at 0615 and ready to leave the house for just after 7am on a wet morning in Glasgow.

Just east of the city, it seemed to be completely dry and I had a good, clear run up the road to Auchallater at Glenshee, where I arrived at 0920.

Rather than walk the 5k on the Land Rover track, I decided to take the bike

It was fairly slow going, but still faster than walking.

Once I got to the lodge about 1000, I stashed the bike behind a heathery clump and started the ascent up and alongside Loch Callater.

Loch Callater
It was easy going along the stalkers paths, and the climb was very easy, so I found myself moving quickly.

I got to the fence line which marks the ascent up to the summit of Carn an-t Saigart Mor and started to follow it, gaining 200m or so to the summit. As I climbed, I started to come across some wreckage of the Canberra crash from the 50's - a remarkable amount.

I pressed on for the summit. The summit has 2 cairns, 150m from each other, so I visited both just to be sure, about 1130, and had a roll. It was in mist, so I had to navigate between them.

From there I headed for Carn an-t Saigart beag, rather than following the stalkers paths.

I came down a little and discovered the biggest piece of wreckage:

It's quite amazing that this was never recovered, and that the paint has survived 60 years on the summit of a Munro.

I pressed on, to the summit of Carn an-t Saigart Beag, then over to The Stuic, which was looking fantastic.

It stayed dry, but with a cold wind and I wandered over from the Stuic, by map and compass in the mist to the summit of Carn a' Choire Bhoideach, at 1250.

I headed back to the big stalker's path and followed that back round to the fence line on Carn an t-Saigart Mor, then back alongside Loch Callater where I met a huge group of older walkers who were just starting their walk for the day.

I was back at the bike at 1420 and made it back down the 5k track in a little over 12 minutes.....
