A' Chailleach, Carn Sgùlain and Carn Dearg, 30th August 2020

Only two weeks since my last trip out and by 0615, I was on the road again, headed north to Newtonmore to meet up with Toezi. It would be nice to have some company this time, since both of my last trips have been solo.

We met up just before 0900 at the car park at the end of Glen Road at Newtonmore. There were a few midges about so it was on with the boots and rucksacks and heading for the Allt a' Chaorainn path fairly smartly.

We pressed on up the path fairly swiftly, passing the sheperd's hut on the hillside and wondering what that would be like inside.

We pushed upwards, on ground that wasn't too steep and made the summit of our first Munro, A' Chailleach at 1030. We grabbed a quick snap to send to Gordy in Australia on his birthday and had a sandwich.

It was jackets on, because a stiff northerly was blowing and had brought us a couple of showers despite the forecast.

We plotted our route directly to Carn Sgulain and it was a fairly easy wee jaunt to get there. We arrived on the summit of Munro number 2 at 1120. We visited both summits - they are close and by eye it's very difficult to tell.

From there, it was a case of follow the fence posts along the long plateau. I used it as a good refresher for my navigation and it was quite useful to start seeing complex details in the landscape again.

Carn Dearg is the most impressive peak of the day and has a great steep face.

We wandered over and made it to the summit at 1325, where we sat for a while until the midges decided to feast on us.

Then it was off, down through Gleann Ballach and then following the Allt Fhionndrigh back down to     Glenbanchor. There are rowans galore and it's a really nice spot.

We made it back to the cars at 1600, and stopped in at the Newtonmore Grill for a trucker's coffee before heading back down a busy A9.
