Beinn Trilleachan, 18th Sept 2020
I knew I needed a day off to get into the hills, but I just didn't know where I fancied! I got home from work the day before and discussed plans with the wife and found I had a decent window of time and also a tremendous spell of weather. I hastily packed my rucksack and got an early night, ready for an 0630 rise on the Friday morning.
I was on the road after stopping for petrol and a sandwich just after 0730. It was a beautiful, clear morning in Glasgow, but by the time I got to Dumbarton, it was a dark mist.
The drive up continued that way, driving in and out of fog banks, and it lead to some utterly stunning views of Loch Lomond and the Rannoch Moor.
I made it into Glen Etive at 0910, and it was fairly clear.
I headed down the road, which is in a bit of a state and parked up in the car park at the road end. I tended to some official business and was happy enough to carry on.
I started at 1008, at pretty much sea level, then it was the tough slog up the side of the forest. I was bothered greatly by the humidity, I was sweating a lot, and also by those wee flat bugs that stick to your skin and you can't brush them off.
Once I left the bogginess of the forest, I thought the going would be easier, but no. It was mud, hidden rocks and long grass, leading to a long slog relentlessly upwards. With sweating and beasties.
It did eventually start to level off though and when it did, the views were exceptional!
I pressed on to the top and found that a bumblebee had managed to beat me to the summit, fair play to it.
I made the summit at 1230, and stopped for lunch and to enjoy the views.
I headed back down the way I came, which was hard going and reminisced about the last time I was on this hill, on 4th March 2000. 20 years ago....that's a scary thought.
No time to dwell on the past, so I headed back to the car and down through the busy Loch Lomond traffic.
