Bynack More, 14th April 2022

My period of extended leave from being a useful member of society is now into it's last week and I had once chance left to get out for a one-day Munro before I find myself thrown back into the world of work.

Toezi and I had arranged this date when we were away a fortnight ago in Aviemore, quite possibly after a good few beers.

Anyway, the date rolled around and Toezi was on driving duty, so I waited for him at the window at 7am and very soon we were away and up the A9. The midweek freight traffic slowed us down quite a bit much to Toezi's frustration, but we soon pulled into the Allt Mor car park, paid our £4 and set off.

We left at 1000 and really enjoyed the stroll through the woodlands which were alive with birdsong at that time of the morning. We even heard a woodpecker somewhere in the distance.

We passed An Lochan Uaine at 1045, which was really living up to it's name.

The old pines on the hillside were looking particularly lovely in the morning mist.

We carried on, making excellent pace and heading over the burn crossing before we came to the end of the wider path and the bridge which took us to the hill proper.

Bynack More in the distance

This is where we got our first view of our hill for today and the path up from there was obvious.

We pressed on up the path on to the plateau which goes between about 750-800m. We arrived at the 810m point on the map at 1225. It was getting a little cooler, so it was time to stick on another layer, just to avoid the wind chill.

Bynack More and Bynack Beag

There was not a lot of snow, in stark contrast to our previous adventure. We were fully packed for it - winter boots, crampons, axes, helmet, but we really needed none of that, and I think that will be put away until later in the year now.

We pressed on up the path and then the steep climb, meeting lots of people coming up and going down. It's a popular hill, being so close to Aviemore and in the middle of the Easter holidays.

We made the summit at 1305, only 30 mins from the 810m point.

Bynack More Summit

We actually went past the summit and tracked back a few metres once we saw it. The folk behind us did the same thing, so we weren't too concerned about it.

No exciting summit views this time, but on the descent we got some views. We returned via the same route.

We arrived back at the car park a bit stiff and sore at 1545(ish). There was a light smir of rain, but it wasn't cold. A quick change of clothes and then back in the car for the long journey home, punctuated only by a coffee stop in Perth.

We were back in Glasgow for 7pm.
